Tootling around Beijing

We survived our first full day in Beijing. After a lazy morning, we headed out to take in a few local sights. We were blessed with surprisingly cool weather and a bit of light rain.

First stop was The Ancient Observatory, one of the oldest astronomical observatories in the world, dating back to the 1400s. The highlight was a big stone tower with a collection of ornately decorated bronze scientific instruments on the top. Pete really liked this because it is related to outer space.

Next we wandered through Ming City Wall Park, which has remnants of the ancient Beijing city wall surrounded by a very nice park. The Southeast Corner Watchtower is particularly impressive. It's a huge tower built up on the wall which has been nicely restored and hosts an art gallery and a small wall-related museum inside. Pete says "all in all, your're just another brick in the wall".
